What is the difference between health and wellness?
The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” 1
The National Academy of Sports Medicine defines wellness as “a personal journey towards mental, physical, social, and emotional betterment of life.” 2 Conventionally, wellness requires balance, and has come to represent developing and practicing health-promoting habits to achieve holistic wellbeing.

What is a Wellness Coach?
A wellness coach is a professional who helps clients to set, achieve, and maintain self-identified health goals. Wellness coaches focus on the physical, social, and emotional dimensions of wellness, and apply strategies that empower clients to make changes that improve their quality of life. Wellness coaches do not diagnose, treat, interpret medical data, prescribe medications or supplements, or engage in psychological therapy.
How do I know if Wellness Coaching is right for me?
Wellness coaching is ideal for individuals who are looking to improve their overall health, but are unsure what to do or how to do it. Coaching is also a great option for those who have had difficulty adhering to lifestyle changes in the past, and find guidance and accountability to be helpful. Some people benefit from holistic wellness coaching while others prefer to emphasize a specific domain, such as nutrition, exercise, or stress.
What is the difference between a Nutrition Coach and a Registered Dietician Nutritionist?
A Nutrition Coach is a health and fitness professional who helps clients improve their overall eating habits. Coaches provide education and support based on general nutritional guidelines and principles. Coaches help clients develop, implement, and maintain self-determined healthy eating strategies, focusing on behavior to create lasting dietary change. Nutrition coaches do not diagnose or treat medical conditions, and do not prescribe specific diets, medications, supplements, or meal plans; however, they can help clients to implement and adhere to a plan prescribed by a qualified healthcare provider.
A Registered Dietician Nutritionist is a healthcare professional with specialized training and expertise in identifying and managing nutritional needs based on a medical condition or a clinical dietary recommendation or necessity. A dietician can prescribe and manage diets and meal plans associated with medical illnesses and conditions. Many dietitians offer coaching as part of their treatment plan.
Will my Wellness Coach work with my healthcare provider?
If your healthcare provider has recommended a specific exercise or nutrition plan, we will gladly communicate with them with your permission. Although coaches cannot prescribe treatment, we can help clients to implement and adhere to a plan prescribed by a qualified healthcare provider.
